Welcome the the Mid Canterbury Cricket Website On behalf of the Board of Control I would like to welcome you to the 2011/12 season.
The Mid Canterbury Winter training programme was altered from previous years to be shorter but more intensive. We began in July with specialist batting, pace bowling and spin sessions three times a week for the month. Paul Wiseman ran the first two spin bowling sessions and set the tone for the programme. These sessions proved to be very successful and were well attended. The squad sessions began in August with four squads training three evenings a week, All age groups will have four sessions by the end of September. This programme will prove to be good preparation for the forthcoming season.
The new season will get underway on 8th October with the Open Grade competing in two 45 over competitions on either side of Christmas, the Pritchard Shield and Muirhead Rosebowl. The 20/20 competition will continue over 4 weekends beginning at the end of November and concluding with the finals just before Christmas. Junior cricket in Mid Canterbury is very popular with contant growth in players from the Have-a-go programme up to and including 3rd Grade. All junior grades will start on the 29th October. 7th Grade, otherwise known as kiwi will start on Friday 28th October.
The Ashburton College 1st XI boys continue with their involvement in the Christchurch 1st XI competition. Cricket at Ashburton College continues to thrive with new players being drawn into the game at 3rd Grade level. The 1st XI girls should be competitive again this season, with some of the girls training hard over the winter. The Club Committee have further projects in the pipeline, one of which is another tour to Australia in September 2012.
The Senior players have many opportunities once again with the Rep team continuing in zone 4, where we were very competitive last season and will be hoping to finish in the top half of the zone this season. A good representative calendar will ensure that the players are well prepared when the first Hawke Cup game gets underway in January. Winter training has been progressing well since the beginning of August.
The Junior Representative calendar is full with many matches leading up to the various tournaments in December and January. Junior Representative players have many opportunities with Canterbury teams selected fllowing the regional tournaments and various Tri and Quad series games in January to give the best players in the Canterbury region more, good quality cricket. The girl’s year 5/6 team competed in the Christchurch yaer 5/6 competition for the first time last season and performed very well. We will be fielding a Year 7/8 team as well in the Christchurch year 7/8 girls competition, which is an exciting development. There are plenty of opportunities for these junior players to continue their development as cricketers.
We hosted a successful SIPT tournament last year, a summary of which can be viewed by following the link under News below. Thank you to all the players, coaches and managers for their efforts during the forthcoming season and a special thank you to all the parents and volunteers who make a crucial contribution in sustaining cricket at the amateur level.
I would also like to thank all our sponsors for the forthcoming season, in particular the Ashburton Trust, Lion Foundation, Canterbury Cricket and New Zealand Cricket for your support, which is very much appreciated.
I would like to wish everyone the best for the forthcoming season, may it be a successful and enjoyable one.
