The Mid Canterbury Under 15 cricket tournament report.
The Mid Canterbury Under 15 cricket team travelled over to Westport for the Under 15 regional tournament. Unfortunately the weather had a major effect on the tournament.
Day 1 Mid Canterbury played Buller with the game reduced to a 30 over game because of rain. Buller batted first and were bowled out for 54 runs, by some good bowling by the Mid Canterbury bowlers. Leading the way were spinners Ryan Fahey with 4 for 7 off 5 overs and Thomas Meyrick 2 for 14 off 6 overs. Mid Canterbury scored the runs for the loss off 3 wickets. Leading scorer was Ben Ward with 29. The game was played in steady drizzle.
Day 2 Mid Canterbury played Metro Black, Mid Canterbury bowled 8 overs before rain stopped the game for the day.
Day 3 Mid Canterbury played Canterbury Country, the game being reduced to a 45 over game. Canterbury Country batted first and with some good bowling and fielding from Mid Canterbury saw them bowled out for 106. Top bowling performances from Harry Jones with 3 for 8 off 7 overs, Tom Bird 2 for 16 off 8 overs and Kurt Polson 2 for 21 off 9 overs. Mid Canterbury batsman also found the conditions in drizzley rain hard going being bowled out 20 runs short of the target. Kurt Polson was the only batsman to master the conditions with a fighting innings of 38 not out. The lost cost the team a chance of making the finals.
Day 4 Mid Canterbury played South Canterbury in bright sunny conditions. Mid Canterbury batted first and found the game tough with a damp outfield. A second wicket patnership between Ben Ward 55 and Harry Jones 23 paved the way for the middle order to attack the South Canterbury bowlers, with Kurt Polson 35 not out, Thomas Meyrick 32 and Sean Strange 19 which included 3 sixes contributed to Mid Canterbury finishing on 194 for 5 off 50 overs, South Canterbury struggled against a fired up bowling spell from Polson and Strange. They struggled all through their innings and were finally bowled out in the 40th over for 104 runs. It was an impressive fielding and bowling performances from the Mid Canterbury boys. Off spinner Thomas Meyrick was the outstanding bowler taking 4 for 24 off 10 overs, and was backed up by Jack Foster 2 for 7, Kurt Polson 2 for 15 and Tom Evans 1 for 4.Sean Strange took 4 catches in the outfield. It was an impressive performance from the Mid Canterbury Team after losing to South Canterbury in an earlier warmup game and the disappointment of the previous day.
Overall it was a very sucessfull tournament by the Mid Canterbury Team played in very trying conditions.Their fielding was also of a high standard with several younger members of the team standing out,the team was well lead by Ben Ward.
Another highlight was the naming of Sean Strange in the Canterbury Under15 A Team and Thomas Meyrick and Callum Gallagher in the Canterbury B Team.Ben Ward was unavaiable for selection due to Under17s.Kurt Polson who was also unavaiable for selection was Mid Canterburys most valuable player.

It was to be the West Coasts only loss at the tournament.
Day 5 Mid Canterbury played Buller. Mid Canterbury batted first and scored 212 for 7 off 45 overs after rain delayed play. Tainui Kuru 54, Ben Ward 37, Sam Clarke 30 and Matt Tait 26 were the leading scorers. Buller started their innings off in drizzly rain which made it difficult for the Mid Canterbury bowlers. But an outstanding bowling performance by Kurt Polson of 6 for 23 saw Buller dismissed for 125 off 29 overs, which completed a win for Mid Canterbury.
It was a satisfactory week for the team winning 3 of their 5 games, with most of the boys available for the team next season. Special mentions should be made of their outstanding fielding efforts in the 5 days. They were one of the top fielding teams of the tournament. Another feature was the naming of Ben Ward in the Canterbury Under 17 team to compete at the national tournament.
