Gillette Cup One day game - 23rd October 2011 Ashburton College 1st XI vs St Andrews

The Ashburton College 1st XI finally resumed their 2011 season playing St Andrews College 1st XI in a Gillette Cup qualifying game on Sunday at the Weedens Domain in Rolleston.  This game originally set to be played in the opening round on 8 October was rained off however required a result to see who would progress to the next knockout game.  Due to the rain in the week the game was transferred to an artificial pitch that would enable a game to be played.  The toss was won by St Andrews College who elected to bat with the outfield still damp from the rain it meant the ball was slippery and difficult for the bowlers in the earlier overs.  St Andrews College lost wickets on a regular basis with Ashburton’s bowlers applying consistent pressure with good fielding by the team.  Kurt Polson was the best of the bowlers to take 4 wickets for 16 runs from 8 overs.  The bowlers were supported by the fielding with 7 catches taken to dismiss St Andrews for 99 runs off 38 overs.  In reply Ashburton College applied themselves to the task knowing they only required 2.5 runs per over off their 40 overs for their 100 runs needed.  Harry Jones (18 n.o.) anchored the innings who batted through with Matt Tait (38 n.o.) coming in to increase the run rate at the right time to get the team home for the loss of 4 wickets after 36 overs.  The team showed their patience when batting and had the run chase well under control to achieve an excellent win.
